6 Quick Tips For Choosing Web Hosting

Tip #1 for choosing web hosting is to be certain you get enough bandwidth with your hosting plan.

When I started building and hosting websites on line 5 years ago I made a huge mistake. I chose a $2 hosting plan that didn’t offer much bandwidth. I found out the hard way too. I was doing a PPC campaign to drive traffic to my new site. I was making sales for a few days and then for the next week…no sales. I had no idea what was wrong so I visited my own web site to find a page that said “Bandwidth Limit Exceeded”. I was so new I didn’t even know what that meant. I emailed my hosting provider (more on this in tip #2) and finally got a response a few days later that said I would have to purchase more bandwidth before my site would be live again…lesson learned…Now any hosting plan I purchase has unlimited bandwidth.

Tip #2 is always choose a web hosting company that offers 24/7 customer support

I mentioned having to e-mail for support in tip #1. That is not the way to go. Now any hosting company I choose always offers 24/7 live customer support. There is nothing worse than having a problem with your site and not being able to talk to a tech right there and then to help you fix the problem…Always choose a company with 24/7 live customer support.

Tip #3 is to be sure you get enough disk space.

Today more than ever the Internet is content driven. If you plan to get to the top of the natural listings in the search engines for your targeted niche, you will need to add a lot of content to your site. That’s where plenty of disk space comes into the picture. There are hosting companies on line that offer unlimited disk space in their hosting plans for $5 to $8 a month. No need to pay more or settle for less than unlimited disk space in the plan you choose.

Tip #4 is to get a free domain name with your web hosting plan.

Hey it’s out there so why not take advantage of it. Save yourself the $10 a year on a .com domain name. Many companies offer it as a standard feature in their hosting plans.

Tip #5 for choosing web hosting is to get a 99.9% guarantee of server up time.

If your web hosting companies server is down so is your website. This also happened to me early on in my on line career. Again doing a PPC campaign to send visitors to my site and it went down. No one could even see my site. No I was not only losing money by making no sales…I was also losing money by paying for traffic to be sent to my site. Another hard and expensive lesson learned… Moral of the story….Get a guarantee that your site will be up 99.9% of the time.

6th and final tip is don’t pay too much.

There is so much competition in the web hosting industry that there is no need to pay more than 5 to 8 bucks a month for your hosting service. There are a number of companies that offer unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk space, free domain name, and 24/7 customer service for under $10 a month. Unless you need a dedicated server there simply is no reason to pay more. And I am talking about very high quality award winning hosting companies for that price too.

Web hosting is the most essential part of a web presence, because this is what decides hp many visitors your website can handle, how fast your website will load (largely),and this is what powers your website in the first place. It goes without saying that choosing the best possible web hosting for your website is very essential. Here are a few tips for beginners to make the right choice when they’re choosing web hosting services.

Doing your bit of research is essential. All of them offer similar services, but they are all packaged differently. The package will be key to deciding which hosting plan you will choose for your website(s). This will also be decisive in determining the quality of your website, depending upon the disk space, bandwidth and emails provided to you.

Choose a provider that is reputed for its customer service and support.

Many companies offer benefits like a 30-day money back guarantee, where your entire amount is refunded in case you’re unhappy with the quality of the service. This should preferably be a no-questions-asked benefit. Other benefits include 99.9% network uptime and 100% power backup, which is promised by almost all the companies.

Choosing web hosting services can be a tough ask for beginners. Here are some tips to help them make a better choice.

Six Points to Consider Before You Choose Web Hosting

There are six points to consider on how to choose web hosting. It will not be an easy task but if you will be aware of the important features you should take note of, the task will be less difficult. There are many points you should look into but for starters, here are the top six.

Space is the first feature to consider in learning how to choose web hosting. The space provided by the hosting service should typically be more than the space you require. You would do well to decline a particular hosting service if it could not meet the space limit you demand or wish to have. Nowadays, it is typical to ask for at least 50 GB of space. Think twice on a hosting service offering lower than this capacity.

Next, check the bandwidth. It should at least be 1 GB or more. If it is lower than 1 GB, you might experience problems with the website especially in peak hours when many visitors view the site at the same time.

The third thing to check is the script and database of support. My hosting service companies support the use of PHP, MySQL and CGI and this will be very helpful to many of you. Some even offer free web hosting for these features.

Learning how to choose web hosting is also about learning the importance of an FTP support. An efficient FTP support is required for all necessary files to be uploaded much faster to the site. Not all service providers offer such support so it is crucial to ask this first.

There are many free web hosting providers but you should know that in place of giving you free hosting, they will most likely put banner ads on your site. They will profit from these banners each time it is clicked on your site. Some banner ad placements go overboard that it makes your site looks cramped and “dirty.” This may leave a bad impression on your visitors and might be discouraged to go back. Thus, think twice about resorting to free web hosting services. Your site might look more professional if you opt to pay instead.

Lastly, take note of maximum file upload. Many providers create a size limit on files you can upload on your site. If the files you want to upload are bigger than the set maximum, it will create problems for you. In general, you want to choose a web host that would allow big file uploads to minimize problems when setting up your site.

These are just a few tips. When you are already running a website, you will learn more on how to choose web hosting.

How To Choose Web Hosting

This article is in continuation to the article How To Choose Web Hosting – I. The previous article talked about disk space and this article will focus on Bandwidth, database and hosting technologies.

What is meant by Bandwidth in context of web hosting?

It refers to the amount of data that transfers into and out of your web hosting account.

A small or medium web site will consume between 1GB and 5GB of data transfer per month.

Calculate the following: average page size * expected page views per month

Example: If your average page size is 30KB and you expect 50,000 page views per month, you will need 0.03MB * 50,000 = 1.5GB.

The best way to calculate the amount of bandwidth you need is to calculate the size of your downloadable content and multiply by the number of visitors you receive each month. Add to that the number of emails sent and received and other content such as FTP uploads.

Database in context of web hosting

Database stores data that can be product name, product description, customer name, customer address or the information that appears on web pages. The database helps to serve information dynamically as it is requested by the user. You might have seen the sites where you can get all the products in the particular price range. It can also be used for storing and accessing customer records and customizing the page according to customer’s previous purchases. SQL (Standard Query Language) is a standard language for accessing databases.

Hosting Technologies

Windows Hosting – Windows hosting means hosting of web services that runs on the Windows operating system. Windows Hosting must be needed if ASP (Active Server Pages) is used as server scripting/programming language, or if you plan to use a database like Microsoft Access or Microsoft SQL Server.

Unix Hosting – Unix hosting means hosting of web services that runs on the Unix operating system.

Linux Hosting – Linux hosting means hosting of web services that runs on the Linux operating system.

The difference in all these operating systems lies in the type of software each can run. Windows is suitable for Microsoft products such as MS Access databases, ASP for delivering dynamic content, and VBScript for site enhancements. UNIX cannot accommodate these technologies so if you absolutely need ASP or VBScript you should pick a Windows host. UNIX hosts deliver dynamic content by using software such as PHP, CGI, and MySQL – technologies which are also available on Windows hosts.

Windows is necessary for hosting Windows media files such as videos and audio. Other types of media such as MP3, Flash, Shockwave and Real can be handled by either UNIX or Windows.
